Classroom activities

The Science Enhancement Programme (SEP) in collaboration with BGS have written a set of simple classroom activities that enable students to learn about some basic science concepts using seismology and earthquakes as a unifying theme. These are available for free download from the SEP website as 'Innovations in Practical work:SEISMOLOGY'.

The activities include:

• building your own seismometer — four different designs in one simple kit
• simulating earthquake location with two microphones
• modelling earthquake processes with a brick and sandpaper
• seismic waves — and Slinkies
• earthquake damage from building resonance
• a simple vibration detector for simple experiments
