Earthing

Pylon

Great Britain has an extensive energy infrastructure continuously supplying electricity to our homes and workplaces all year round. A key part of the energy network are the thousands of transformers used to step-down the high voltages supplied by the power stations.

To ensure safe operation each of these transformers, each one is 'grounded' to earth by an array of earthing rods and cabling. BGS, working with Cranfield University, EON UK Plc and EDF Energy Plc have developed a GIS-based tool from the DiGMapGB-Plus dataset to provide installation guidance and prognosis for installing earthing-rods for 11kV transformers.

New national spatial datasets for ground resistivity and 'driven-rod' penetrability are currently in production.
