The day also includes a special guest appearance from TV s Professor Iain Stewart.

BGS wins Best Conference Presentation at Esri UK Conference 2013

The Esri UK Annual Conference 2013, held on May 21st, attracted over 1000 delegates from across the UK.
The Understanding Our World awards honoured exceptional and innovative projects with Esri GIS.
Patrick Bell, representing the BGS smartphone development team, was awarded ‘Best Conference Presentation’ for his talk in the mobile track entitled ‘Geology apps, maps and augmented reality’.
The presentation discussed how BGS are developing smartphone apps, underpinned by web services, to provide access to mapping and other geological information in the field. iGeology (available for iPhone and Android), iGeology 3D, its augmented reality companion product, and mySoil were demonstrated.

Fully-funded PhD in development of a UAV-based landslide monitoring system

Landslides present a significant hazard to infrastructure, property and human life. Underlying processes are often poorly understood, and can be difficult to predict. UAV platforms offer exciting new opportunities to capture surface processes at high spatial resolution, on-demand and at low-cost. This research will explore the potential of a mini-UAV for landslide assessment, and will integrate resultant surface observations with sub-surface datasets to provide an enhanced environment for interpretation of landslide behaviour.

Currently about 100 000 Scottish thin sections are available (S & N registration series). 75 000 English and Welsh thin sections (E registration series) will be added in due course.

A vision for the BGS Environmental Modelling Platform

The concept of an Environment Modelling Platform (EMP) was a radical change for BGS when it was included as a goal in 2009 - 2014 strategy. It highlighted the necessity for making all BGS science and data accessible both internally in BGS and to the users of our science. Such a platform would make BGS research, knowledge and data more relevant to a world desperate to solve problems of environmental conflict, mitigate hazards, adapt to change and develop resources sustainably.

Risk reduction research promotes development of multi-user CO2 storage sites beneath UK North Sea

Experts from academia, government and industry have signed a collaborative research agreement that will provide invaluable knowledge to reduce risk and guide the development of commercial multi-user offshore storage sites for carbon dioxide.
