Linked data allows powerful and easy re-use of data by interconnecting data, putting it in to context and enabling comparisons. By clearly representing the structure and meaning of the data it makes it easier to create applications and visualisations that use it.
The use of linked data is being promoted by data.gov.uk to open up access to government-funded, public data. BGS are publishing its data as linked data to accelerate its exploitation by all potential users. We hope that the release of our data in this format will stimulate new and innovative ways to use our information to help solve some of the environmental problems facing humankind today.

Made available in June 2012, the geochemistry data model is the second download to be made available through the OpenGeoscience Knowledge Exchange project.

This report is aimed at professionals involved in planning or construction, but it may also be relevant to help house-holders judge whether or not further professional advice should be sought.
It provides relevant subsurface information necessary to design effective infiltration-to-the-ground sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) such as shallow soakaways, infiltration trenches and infiltration basins.
The report highlights:
- the presence of any potentially significant constraints that mean an infiltration system should not be installed
- the extent to which the ground will drain
- significant potential for natural ground instability as a result of increased infiltration
- the attenuation capacity of the unsaturated zone

The new Geological Walk at BGS Keyworth was officially opened on 17 May 2012 by Sir John Beddington, Government Chief Scientific Adviser.

The Eden Valley in East Cumbria is underlain by Permo-Triassic sandstone, the major aquifer in North West England.
The aquifer is covered by low permeability till deposits. Concern about rising nitrate trends in some boreholes has prompted collaborative research into groundwater flow systems and timescales in the area.
