The British Geological Survey took to the air on 20 November 2009 in the aftermath of the flooding, which devastated homes and businesses in the North West, to find out how modern flooding compares to ancient flood areas. BGS photographer Fergus MacTaggart observed flooding from 600m (2000 ft) as he flew over the worst affected areas around Dumfries, Workington, Cockermouth, and Lockerbie.

This course provides a comprehensive grounding in the principles and use of ArcGIS desktop software. The course is delivered via a series of instructor led lectures and exercises. The emphasis is upon developing confidence as ArcGIS functionality is investigated. PowerPoint presentations are only used as a last resort. All exercises will utilise BGS offshore geological and geophysical datasets. Alternatively the course can also be provided using datasets provided by the customer.

It became the Geological Survey of Great Britain and Ireland (1845-1906), Geological Survey of Great Britain (1906-1965), and the Institute of Geological Sciences (1965-1984) before being renamed the British Geological Survey.
