3D model
Site update

3D models help us visualise the ground beneath our feet without the need for interpretation of traditional geological maps. We are developing 3D models at range of scales to meet the needs of our users at various resolutions and in a range of formats.

Now available:

LithoFrame samples | 3D geological maps
The LithoFrame1M model and sample LithoFrame models at other resolutions are available as free downloads in various formats.

3D research and development | GSI3D software tool
The BGS uses GSI3D, a software tool developed in house, as well as commercial applications such as Gocad and Petrel. GSI3D is now available on general release as part of the GSI3D Research Consortium.

Latest reports indicate that at least 65 people have been killed and many are still trapped under rubble as a result of buildings collapsing during the earthquake. Many of those killed are as a result of debris falling and crushing the occupants of two buses in Christchurch.

This latest shock is much closer to the main population centre of Christchurch than the magnitude 7.2 earthquake that occurred on 3 September 2010 earthquake and caused significant damage.
