Burton Bradstock rock fall, 24 July 2012
Site update

On 24 July 2012, the BGS Landslide Response Team received reports of a large rock fall on the Jurassic Coast at Burton Bradstock in Dorset.

Tragically, 22-year-old Charlotte Blackman from Derbyshire was killed in the incident. The public have been advised to stay away from the cliffs.

It was reported that approximately 400 tons of rock fell in two rock-fall events approximately 20 minutes apart at around 12:30.

African groundwater maps
Site update

The quantitative maps of groundwater productivity, storage, and depth to groundwater can be downloaded below. Each map is available as a high resolution pdf file.

The quantitative maps are the first produced for Africa and are underpinned by dedicated case studies and systematic data/literature reviews. They are designed to show information at the continental, or regional scale (nominally at 1:20M).

Detailed description of the methodology, and a full list of data sources, used to develop the groundwater storage and productivity maps can be found in the peer-reviewed paper (Quantitative maps of groundwater resources in Africa) on the maps and supplementary material, published in Environmental Research Letters.

BGS Edinburgh
Site update
The BGS have recently worked in partnership with Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) on the strategic assessment of the value and state of Scotland s geodiversity to help develop the basis for a national policy framework on geodiversity. We also collaborate with local authorities, national parks, geoparks and third sector bodies in raising awareness of Scotland s geological heritage.

Scotland's Geodiversity Charter was launched in Edinburgh on 6 June 2012. The Charter is the work of the Scottish Geodiversity Forum, with support from the Scottish Government, Scottish Natural Heritage, the British Geological Survey (BGS) and GeoConservationUK

The Natural Hazards Partnership (NHP) brings together expertise from across the UK's leading public sector agencies with the aim of drawing upon scientific advice in the preparation, response and review of natural hazards.

In response to the work of the Natural Hazards Partnership, the BGS has prepared a number of Geohazard notes to provide relevant summary information for some of the geohazards that could affect the UK.

The Geohazard notes provide information on how and why the hazard occurs, how it is measured, locations susceptible to the hazard and possible worst case scenarios.

The notes also give details on how the BGS and collaborating organisations respond to such hazards.

Flooding signs
Site update
In recent years groundwater has been recognised as a significant source of flooding in the UK. These FAQS are intended for home buyers, planners and and anyone that thinks they have been affected by groundwater flooding. FAQs include:

  • My house is affected by flooding, could it be groundwater?
  • What steps can I take to reduce the effect of groundwater flooding on my property?
  • What data does BGS provide on groundwater flooding?
  • How can I check if groundwater flooding has occurred at my property in the past?
  • How well do BGS groundwater flooding maps indicate the susceptibility at an individual house?

The BGS are researching the hydrogeology of the superficial deposits within the Clyde valley to further characterise groundwater levels and the groundwater chemistry in the different geological units. This work should help us better understand the issues highlighted for Glasgow's water environment and help answer the key questions identified by stakeholders.

We are also developing a pilot groundwater monitoring network for Glasgow
