The British Geological Survey (BGS) at Keyworth, Nottingham will be running free guided tours of its National Archive holdings on Saturday 5th December 2009. This event is in support of the national Archive Awareness Campaign 2009 and the BGS theme this year is 'Voyages of Discovery - from Darwin to the Moon and beyond'.

Jon Gluyas, Professor in Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and Geo-Energy at Durham University, has been appointed chairman of the British Geological Survey (BGS) Board. Professor Gluyas will take over this role from the current chairman Derek Davis on the 1st January 2010.

The British Geological Survey (BGS) has been the custodian of the UK Continental Shelf core and records collections at Gilmerton (Edinburgh) for a number of years on behalf of the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) and predecessor departments. Under a Memorandum of Understanding with DECC the BGS provides access to the collections for the oil and gas industry and academic community in the UK and abroad. The dual-purpose Loanhead (Edinburgh) facility is used for the storage of UK shallow marine cores, records and magnetic tapes (not used by the oil and gas industry), and also houses the BGS's marine operations facilities.

Historic buildings in Britain are increasingly at risk from damage due to the effects of climate change and a lack of suitable building stone for conservation, repair and new build. The work of the British Geological Survey (BGS) on building stones will be the focus of the symposium 'Building a future for stone' in London on 1st Oct 2009. This coincides with the decision to transfer, on long-term loan, the UK building stone collection from the Natural History Museum to the BGS headquarters in Nottingham.

The British Geological Survey's Edinburgh Headquarters, Murchison House, is opening its doors to the public from 10.00 to 17.00 on Saturday 26th September as part of Edinburgh's ''Doors Open Day''. Amongst the exhibits, demonstrations and experiments at the BGS will be rocks collected by Charles Darwin from the Galapagos during his voyage on HMS Beagle.
