Scientists at the British Geological Survey (BGS) were alerted by their automatic earthquake location software 11 minutes after the earthquake struck Chile. Data has been received by the BGS from all over the world including seismic stations in the UK. Since then BGS seismologists have been examining the data and investigating why Chile was struck by an earthquake of this size.

Scientists at the British Geological Survey were alerted by their automatic earthquake location software 10 minutes after the earthquake struck Haiti. The seismic waves from the earthquake took 10 minutes to reach their seismic monitoring stations in the UK. OpenGeoscience is a new web service that provides geological maps for the whole of Great Britain, images from its extensive collection of photographs and a wide range of other digital information - all for free.
