Only last summer research published by earth scientists in the international journal Tectonics concluded that geological faults in the Sichuan Basin, China are sufficiently long to sustain a strong ground-shaking earthquake, making them potentially serious sources of regional seismic hazard.

Latest reports suggest that over 15000 people have been killed by a magnitude 7.8 earthquake in the south-western Chinese province in Sichuan. The earthquake occurred 92 km northwest of the city of Chengdu in eastern Sichuan province and over 1500 km from Beijing, where it was also strongly felt. Earthquakes of this size have the potential to cause extensive damage and loss of life.

The British Institute of Professional Photographers (BIPP) have awarded Paul Witney, professional photographer within the Publications Unit of the British Geological Survey (BGS), two awards in their Midland Region Annual Photographic Competition. One winning photograph (with Merit) was of a water droplet in the 'Science' category, the other an aerial photograph of Tewksbury Abbey in the floods, was in 'Press and PR' photography category.

School children enjoying an Open Day at BGS

To mark National Science & Engineering Week, the British Geological Survey (BGS) is running a "Fossil and Rock Show" at its headquarters in Keyworth, Nottinghamshire (12 to 14 March). Nearly a thousand children and their teachers from primary schools across the East Midlands are expected they will learn to pan for gold, record their own earthquake, "tiptoe through time" with spectacular fossils from the BGS s internationally renowned collections and enjoy other hands-on activities and demonstrations.
