Nickel is of strategic importance to the steel industry. Over the last 12 months, it has been the subject of international focus due to record price levels and periods of very low supply. The Nickel Commodity Profile from the BGS provides a succinct summary of issues related to nickel resources, production, uses and trade which will be a valuable resource to all mining industry stakeholders.

The British Geological Survey (BGS) provides impartial and objective scientific advice on geological matters to a wide range of British and international stakeholders. Canatxx Gas Storage Limited proposes an underground gas storage facility in Preesall, Lancashire and BGS is providing scientific data on the rocks below the surface in which gas may be stored. Following recent press interest in a proposed gas storage scheme at Preesall (Lancashire), the BGS is taking this opportunity to clarify its professional relationship with Canatxx Gas Storage Limited.

The British Geological Survey is running free guided archive tours for the public at Keyworth, Nottingham, on Saturday 29th November 2008. This event is in support of the national Archive Awareness Campaign 2008 and is entitled. "Communities, Industry and Earth History - How the past influences our environment". Tours every 30 minutes from 10:00 AM to 14:30 PM on Saturday 29th November. Tours last approximately 90 minutes.

BGS have received a number of reports from residents in the Herefordshire area of a felt event this evening at 18:06 UTC. Felt reports described "a thump as if someone had jumped off the bed upstairs" and "loud boom noise as though something extremely heavy had fallen on the wood floor above my head". The strength of the shaking has been described as moderate, enough to make furniture shake and windows and crockery rattle. Some reports indicate that people were woken from sleep and a few were frightened, indicating an intensity of at least 4 EMS.

Rock wall carved by mining equipment

The 500th anniversary of what may have been the largest earthquake ever to affect the UK in historical times occurs on 19 September 2008. Its size was perhaps as large as magnitude 7 (about the same size as the Kobe earthquake of 1995). The epicentre is unknown but could have been west of the Outer Hebrides. The mysterious earthquake of 1508 is one of the earthquakes discussed in a book recently published on Historical Seismology.
