Sampling at the O2, Greenwich, London
Press release

The largest environmental survey of London's soils has just been completed by scientists at the British Geological Survey (BGS).

The survey was carried out to provide baseline information for over 50 chemical elements. It will enable local authorities and others with an interest in the urban environment to assess the health of London's soil, in addition to stimulating and supporting environmental science research.

This is the first time that the chemical composition of the soils for the whole of London has been measured, and maps are available to view online.

Aurora
Press release
The British Geological Survey (BGS) says all the ingredients are coming together for aurora sightings over the next few days. This is due to the largest solar storm in 4 years which could result in possible space weather impacts in the UK. This coincides with the release of a rarely seen archive of unique geomagnetic records that provide insights into space weather dating back to Victorian times. BGS scientists hope that a study of solar storms in the past will inform the prediction of future space weather and help counter the threat to our national power grid and communication systems.

An earthquake of this size and depth might be felt up to 80-120 km away. A macroseismic survey has been launched on the BGS 'Earthquakes' web site. This is the largest earthquake detected in the general area since a magnitude 3.5 ML event on 10 January 2008 near Glenfinnan. Historically, the largest earthquakes to have occurred nearby were the magnitude 3.6 Moidart event that occurred on 14 October 1902 and the magnitude 3.2 Moidart event of 1 February 1809.
