The Planet Under Pressure conference is billed as "a major international science conference focusing on solutions to the global sustainability challenge". It aims to attract 2,500 global change researchers, policy makers, NGOs, development experts and business leaders to the UK, raising the international profile of UK research and strongly informing the subsequent UN Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro.
This conference, taking place in March 2012 represents a significant opportunity to highlight BGS and NERC science. Our research relates to many of the topics covered by the 100+ sessions, ranging from climate change to science communication.

A free Family Fun Day in our newly refurbished venue. There will be lots to see and plenty of hands-on activities and tours for children and adults.
Rockwatch, the national club for young geologists, along with the National Space Centre, Russell Society and University of Leicester will be joining in the fun at our Keyworth office, near Nottingham. .
This event is part of National Science & Engineering Week which shines the spotlight each March on how science, technology, engineering and maths relate to our everyday lives and helps to inspire the next generation of scientists with fun and participative activities

This is a team-based competition that aims to raise skills and awareness in the science and engineering disciplines required to solve complex socio-economic issues such as climate change.
Teams will be expected to analyse scientific information and data and to provide a report and presentation. There will also be practical challenges. The competition is organised by Prospect and is supported by industry partners: British Geological Survey, Semta, National Skills Academy for Power, TTC Trust Fund, Unionlearn, EAL, Green Collar Academy, Summit Skills and the National Nuclear Laboratory .
The finals of the Environmental Science competition will be held at World Skills UK, National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham, 15-17 November 2012.

The BGS's annual Fossil and Rock Show will be back at Keyworth for National Science & Engineering Week (NSEW) in our completely refurbished venue. The Fossil and Rock Show is aimed at primary schools teaching Key Stage 2 and is particularly suitable for Years 5 and 6.
