There are National Parks all over the world, designated by each nation to protect their most beautiful landscapes. Brecon Beacons National Park is situated in mid-Wales and this year, we celebrate the Park's 50th anniversary.
This is a landscape that offers a legacy of unparalleled proportions with spectacular mountain ranges, internationally renowned geology and bountiful wildlife. It contains some of the most spectacular and distinctive upland formations in southern Britain, and has now been officially recognised as one of the most important geological landscapes in Europe. In October 2005, the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority was awarded membership of the European Geopark Network and given UNESCO Global Geopark recognition for the Fforest Fawr Geopark.
As part of the 50th anniversary celebrations, there will be a fun outdoors day for all the family at the Libanus Mountain Centre on Saturday 7th July. You can make your own fossils, try your hand at panning for gold and find out what underlies one of the most beautiful landscapes in Britain. BGS will be there - why not join us for a fabulous day out?
Directions on getting there.
Look forward to seeing you!

The UK Schools Seismology Project is an exciting new initiative that will help schools to record earthquakes from all over the world and share their scientific data and observations with other schools and researchers via an interactive website. The project has been supported by the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts; the Science Enhancement Programme; and BGS and will be launched at the Institute of Physics on 30 May.
