Sedimentary organic matter

Prof Mike Stephenson, Head of Energy at the British Geological Survey will present a course on "Sedimentary organic matter: characterization and applications"

The course will be held at the University of Milan, 19-21 September 2012.

It includes sections on

  • Preservation and types of sedimentary organic matter (SOM)
  • SOM: palaeoenvironments and palaeoclimatology through geological time
  • SOM, palynology and hydrocarbons: source rocks, hydrocarbon generation
  • Unconventional hydrocarbons: shale gas and coal bed methane

It will be aimed mainly at Italian PhD students, but is open to all. Researchers and professionals in sedimentology, stratigraphy and the hydrocarbons industry may be interested.

Contact Mike Stephenson for more details.

Geological Society 3rd July 2012 19:00-22:00
Crossrail: Soft Ground Tunnelling Through London

The Crossrail project is summarised and compared with other tunnelling projects in London to give an indication of the scale of the building work involved and the timescales involved. The geological setting and stratigraphy along the route will be described before showing how the construction risks to are influenced by the geology, groundwater and man s activities.

All Welcome. Joint Meeting of East Midlands Regional Group and Engineering Group of the London GeolSoc. De La Beche, 7pm.

The Heat Beneath Our Feet

How can rocks keep us warm in winter?

This event explains some cool facts about rocks that means there’s a store of heat right beneath our feet!

We’ll discover the many ways that this store can be tapped into so we can heat (and cool) our own homes, schools and offices.

Extractive Industry Geology (EIG) conference

The Extractive Industry Geology (EIG) Conference is a biennial event for sharing knowledge, scientific research and good practice in the field of applied geology within the UK minerals industry. The next EIG conference is 5-8 September 2012 at Edgehill University, Ormskirk, Lancashire. It is aimed at geo-professionals associated with the extraction of industrial rocks and minerals, including those involved in geology, hydrogeology, geotechnical engineering, restoration and after-use, reserves and resources and quarry design and planning. The conference includes 2-days of presentations plus pre- and post-conference field trips. BGS geologists will be presenting on a range of current minerals research including marine resources, critical metals, modelling environmental impact, resource management and geophysical prospecting.

For further information and updates follow Extractive Industry Geology on FaceBook and Twitter (@EIGConference).

If you are interested in presenting a paper please contact Clive Mitchell.

Yorkshire Valley 19th September to 21st September
Neoproterozoic Era Evolution, Glaciation and Oxygenation
This meeting aims to bring together the broad community of geoscientists (geologists, geophysicists, geochemists, paleobiologists and modellers) who are actively researching the Neoproterozoic Earth System. The aim of this meeting is to discuss the current state of the art regarding our understanding of the Neoproterozoic, make progress towards the stratigraphic subdivision of Precambrian time and to provide a mechanism for planning future research strategies.

NSGG Workshop - Geophysical techniques and applications

Waterborne High Resolution Geophysical Techniques And Applications

The Near Surface Geophysics Group (NSGG) of the Geological Society are hosting a workshop to showcase the use of geophysical techniques in the shallow water environment.

Held over two days at Rutland Water Sailing Club (near Oakham), a series of talks by academic and industry experts are supported by overwater demonstrations of the latest technology. This will allow delegates to witness the whole cycle of work from theory to practice.

Seminar sessions over the two days will cover:

  • How is geophysics useful?
  • High resolution seismic profiling
  • New technologies: their capabilities and limitations
  • Applications: case histories from engineering, archaeology and environmental assessment
  • Thames Tideway case study how to get the most out of geophysics

BGS Marine Operations are planning to attend the workshop and will demonstrate the new BGS road-towable survey catamaran, the White Ribbon, and present recent BGS work in the shallow water environment.

Further information will be posted on the NSGG website

Look About Cultural Olympiad exhibition

Look About: a 2012 Cultural Olympiad temporary exhibition, by artist/geologist Jon Adams, at the BGS London Information Office at the Natural History Museum.

Look About is a two year creative research initiative involving deaf and disabled artists within the South East region and aspiring to spark a cultural shift in attitude towards disability in the arts.

The study of geology is derived from truths written in stone - evidence contained within the rock layers themselves, collated and analysed as a stratigraphy or story that forms the Earth's autobiography and which can be connected by time and mapped in space.

This artistic and creatively driven, multi-layered project weaves together science and art, digital and analogue, observation and autobiographical experiences of dyslexia and Asperger's syndrome by utilising, in part, a geological metaphor.

More about the Look About project or for directions to the BGS London Information Office.

INTERNATIONAL Association of Hydrogeologists Congress (IAH) 16th September to 21st September
VIRTALIS and BGS Bring Time Travel to IAH

THE INTERNATIONAL Association of Hydrogeologists Congress (IAH) at Niagara Falls, is the venue for the unveiling of a critical new function within GeoVisionary. “We’ll be showing GeoVisionary 4D for the first time”, said Andy O’Keeffe, Virtalis’ GeoVisionary Product Manager. “What’s the Fourth Dimension? Well, it is time. We’ll be using British Geological Survey (BGS) hydrology datasets to demonstrate how they have altered over time. GeoVisionary 4D allows users like the UK’s Centre for Ecology and Hydrology to derive new insights from their pre-existing data, as they can closely analyse, interpret and visualise changes as time passes.”

The BGS/Virtalis booth is 23-24.

Visitors to the GeoVisionary booth will be able to explore BGS data, including deviated boreholes, in stunning Virtual Reality (VR). Virtalis will enable delegates to become immersed in the 3D data thanks to its ActiveMove portable VR system, which will feature prominently on the booth with its eight foot wide screen and tented canopy.

Contact Bruce Napier for more details.
