To carry out the relative promotional activity to oil research in Mali a structure named Authority for the promotion of the Oil Research in Mali (AUREP) has been created by Order 04-033 of September 23, 2004.

The AUREP is run by a Director and supported by a deputy Director.

It comprises three (3) services: the Service of Oil Geology, the service of Data Bases, and the Legal and Financial Services.

The Northern part of Mali, constituted by the Sahara desert, contains most of the known sedimentary basin such as the basins of Taoudenni, Gaos, Naras, Iullemedens and Tamesnas.

In order to undertake enhanced promotion, it has been decided to divide the five sedimentary basins in blocks totalling more than 750.000 Km².
