Lithological Description: Orthoquartzitic greyish violet and reddish purple fine- to coarse-grained sandstones, locally pebbly and conglomeratic, with thin red mudstone interbeds.
Definition of Lower Boundary: At base of a fish-bearing lenticular conglomerate named the Afon-y-Waen Fish Bed.
Definition of Upper Boundary: At the sharp junction where red sandstones of the Upper Plateau Beds are overlain by grey-greenish quartzitic sandstones of the Grey Grits Formation.
Thickness: Up to 17 m.
Geographical Limits: South Powys, on the north-east crop of the South Wales coalfield from the River Neath to Afon Crawnon.
