Lithological Description: [Obsolete: use PUCM, SWUCM, UCMS] Grey mudstone, siltstone and pale grey sandstone interbedded; coal seams common; no mudstones with marine fossils (marine bands) present.
Definition of Lower Boundary: At top of mudstone of Cambriense Marine Band. (Base defined by Stubblefield and Trotter, 1957).
Definition of Upper Boundary: At point in conformable sequence where red or brown mudstones of primary origin (eg Etruria Formation) become predominant over grey beds; or at base of sub-Permian unconformity.
Thickness: Up to c.400m in the Potteries Coalfield; to c.350m in Lancashire.
Geographical Limits: Northern and Central England and Wales.
