Stourmouth Silt Member

Computer Code: STMH Preferred Map Code: notEntered
Status Code: Full
Age range: Thanetian Age (GT) — Thanetian Age (GT)
Lithological Description: Interbedded greenish or greyish brown glauconitic silt, some sandy, and silty clay. The Stourmouth Silt is early to mid-Thanetian in age (NP6 to NP8), based on microfossils (especially nannofossils) (King, in prep.) and magnetostratigraphy (Ali and Jolley, 1996).
Definition of Lower Boundary: The base of the Stourmouth Silt Member is taken at the upwards disappearance of the fine-grained sands of the Base Bed Member (BSBD).
Definition of Upper Boundary: The top of the Stourmouth Silt Member occurs at the upwards appearance of fine-grained sand, within the Pegwell Silt Member (PGWS).
Thickness: Up to 4.4 m.
Geographical Limits: Kent and Essex.
Parent Unit: Thanet Formation (TAB)
