Lithological Description: Sandstone, red, yellow and brown, part pebbly; subordinate red mudstone and siltstone.
Definition of Lower Boundary: Gradational on the Roxby Formation (formerly the Permian Upper Marls) in type area and similar relationship elsewhere, but sharp and unconformable on Carboniferous or older rocks locally. In Devon, taken at the base of the Budleigh Salterton Pebble Beds Formation.
Definition of Upper Boundary: Gradational into Mercia Mudstone Group where mudstone/siltstone becomes dominant over sandstone. In Devon taken at top of the Otter Sandstone Formation.
Thickness: Variable, maximum >1500m
Geographical Limits: British Isles.
