Lithological Description: Salt marsh deposits consist of dominantly very fine-grained sand and mud, with interbedded shell layers, plant roots, characterised by irregular wavy bedding, deposited on flat, poorly drained land that is subject to periodic or occasional flooding by saline or brackish water. The salt marsh is usually covered by a thick mat of grassy, halophitic plants. Synonyms: saltmarsh; merse deposits, Scotland. Sand, silt and clay with organic debris.
