Lithological Description: Wackestones, floatstones and subordinate packstones, fine- to coarse-grained, cherty, muddy, dark-grey, thin- to thick-bedded, commonly with diffuse bed boundaries, interbedded with thin mudstones. Slumping is common.
Definition of Lower Boundary: Not seen at type locality. Upward passage of underlying laminated calcisiltites and mudstones of the Hodder Mudstone Formation (undifferentiated) into wackestones and floatstones of the Raingill Limestone Member.
Definition of Upper Boundary: Not seen at type locality. Passage of wackestones and floatstones of the Raingill Limestone Member into overlying laminated calcisiltites and mudstones of the Hodder Mudstone Formation (undifferentiated).
Thickness: To 170m
Geographical Limits: Restricted to the Ashnott [SD 69 48], Middop [SD 83 45], Slaidburn [SD 97 53] and Whitewell [SD 64 47] anticlines.

Stratotypes:
Type Section  Quarry 0.45km southwest of Rain Gill, Slaidburn. The base and top of the unit are not exposed at this locality. 
Type Section  The best exposure in the Middop Anticline is in old quarry 0.5km eastsoutheast of Middop Hall. 
Type Section  In the Ashnott area the unit is exposed in Bonstone Brook, downstream from the track to Ashnott Farm, 1.75km south of Newton.
