Lithological Description: Medium-grained, locally coarse-grained in upper 10m, medium- to thick-bedded, cross-bedded sandstone. Some thin mudstone beds (0 to 3m).
Definition of Lower Boundary: Contact of sandstone with underlying mudstone and siltstone of the Fell Sandstone Formation (undifferentiated).
Definition of Upper Boundary: Contact of sandstone with overlying mudstone and siltstone of the Fell Sandstone Formation (undifferentiated).
Thickness: 20 to 75m
Geographical Limits: In the area southwest of Berwick-upon-Tweed the Fell Sandstone Formation consists of several sandstone members separated by variable thicknesses of mudstone and siltstone. The Peel Knowe Sandstone Member is the middle of three members and is found in a northeast - southwest band between Longridge Towers and Grievestead Moor.
