Metamorphic Aureole, Criffel-Dalbeattie Pluton

Computer Code: MACD Preferred Map Code: notEntered
Status Code: Full
Age range: Devonian Period (D) — Devonian Period (D)
Lithological Description: Rocks of the Carghidown and Ross Formations (Hawick Group) and Siluro - Devonian minor intrusions are metamorphosed to biotite- or hornblende-diopside hornfels within the thermal metamorphic aureole of the Criffel-Dalbeattie Pluton.
Definition of Lower Boundary: Outer boundary of the aureole is gradational but mapped at the first occurrence of rocks of mauvish-brown colour that are indurated by growth of biotite.
Definition of Upper Boundary: Margin of the Criffel-Dalbeattie Pluton.
Thickness: Mapped as between 1 and 3.2km in width.
Geographical Limits: Aureole rocks are exposed along the northern margin of the Criffel-Dalbeattie intrusion from Lochanhead [NX 92 72] to Loach Burn [NX 79 58] where it merges with the thermal aureole around the older Bengairn intrusion. Aureole rocks are exposed along the southern margin of the Criffel-Dalbeattie intrusion at Almorness Point [NX 84 52] and along the coast from Castlehill Point [NX 85 53] to the River Nith [NX 99 66].
