Haddock Sandstone Unit

Computer Code: HADDO Preferred Map Code: notEntered
Status Code: Full
Age range: Cenomanian Age (KE) — Cenomanian Age (KE)
Lithological Description: The Haddock Sandstone Unit consists mainly of cream or white to clear, occasionally grey to green, medium-grained, sometimes argillaceous or pebbly, hard to friable, well-sorted, well-rounded to subangular, calcareous sandstones. These sandstones are often cemented by calcite and pyrite, contain glauconite, mica and carbonaceous fragments and are interbedded with white to grey, or ochre to yellow, or blue to green, hard to very hard, microcrystalline, sandy, sometimes cherty limestones. Locally, the limestones contain micaceous mudstone stringers, traces of calcareous glauconitic mudstones, and thin grey to brown siltstones.
Definition of Lower Boundary: In the West Shetland Basin, sandstones of the Haddock Sandstone Unit pass downwards to sandstones, limestones and mudstones of the Victory Formation. This change is represented on wireline logs by a decrease in gamma-ray log values and an increase in velocity.
Definition of Upper Boundary: none recorded or not applicable
Thickness: West of Shetland, where the Hidra Formation is represented by the clastic-dominated Haddock Sandstone Unit, it reaches a maximum drilled thickness of 139 m in well 205/30-1.
Geographical Limits: West Shetland Basin.
Parent Unit: Hidra Formation (HIDR)
