Lithological Description: Mainly thinly banded, flaggy, micaceous psammite and semipelite with more dominant semipelite locally.
Definition of Lower Boundary: Base of thinly bedded, flaggy psammites and semipelites above massive or thick-bedded quartzites of the Grampian Group (eg Cullen Quartzite Formation).
Definition of Upper Boundary: Top of non-calcareous flaggy psammites and semipelites that pass upwards into banded calcareous flags of the Pitlurg, Cairnfield or Foddsletter Formations, depending upon locality.
Thickness: c. 1350m on coast section; over 400m inland.
Geographical Limits: 1) Newmill (Sheet 85E) and Drybridge (Sheet 95) to coast between Logie Head and Crathie Point (Sheet 96). 2) Core of Ardonald Anticline from SW of Jock's Hill (Sheet 85E) to Ardonald (Sheet 86W). 3) From Rothes Fault at Maggie Knockater to Burn of Mulben (Sheet 85E).
