Lithological Description: A volcanic succession of basalt and basaltic andesite sheets and flows with subordinate volcaniclastic and epiclastic sandstones and conglomerates.
Definition of Lower Boundary: Marked by basalts and basaltic andesites conformably above the predominantly sandstone succession of the Swanshaw Sandstone Formation.
Definition of Upper Boundary: The unconformable junction with the Upper Devonian Stratheden Group.
Thickness: About 600m
Geographical Limits: South and Central Ayrshire, Scotland. Farther east, the volcanic pile near Cumnock is attributed to the Duneaton Volcanic Formation.
