The Geological Survey of Northern Ireland comprises seven operational sectors, each addressing an important group of environmental or resource issues for the Northern Ireland community:

Abandoned mines A study to identify and make safe all old mine workings in Northern Ireland Terry Johnston
Hydrogeology The GSNI is currently providing hydrogeological advice to the Water Management Unit (WMU) of the Environment & Heritage Service through a service level agreement. WMU has responsibility for the sustainable management and protection of water resources in Northern Ireland. A wide variety of activities have the potential to impact groundwater resources and surface water bodies fed by groundwater. There is a need to assess potential impacts and to monitor and manage those activities that have the potential to adversely affect water quality or quantity. Peter McConvey

Breifne Geopark Project  The Briefne project is a project based in Northwest Ireland with the aim of developing a sustainable tourism product based on the natural and cultural heritage of the region. Patrick McKeever

Aggregate resources Sand and Gravel resources of Northern Ireland funded by DOE Planning Service. Currently assessing resources of Stranbane and Omagh LDC's. Mark Cooper
Earth resources GSNI provides an advisory service to the Economic Infrastructure Division, Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment (formerly the Department of Economic Development), the body responsible for licensing exploration for minerals and petroleum in Northern Ireland.
