Hydrological Outlook UK (HOUK)

Hydrological Outlook UK (HOUK)

Early on in its pilot phase, the ESSP initiated a project to investigate the possibility of extending the existing Hydrological Summary to produce a forecast of future hydrological conditions. The project brought together specialists from across the partnership into a project team were led by the Centre of Ecology and Hydrology. To ensure a UK focus, the team was extended to include representation from the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), Natural Resources Wales (NRW) and the Northern Ireland Rivers Agency (NIRA).

The newly developed HOUK was launched in November 2013 and the latest forecast can be seen at www.hydoutuk.net. The HOUK aims to provide an indicative outlook for the water situation using the most comprehensive and up-to-date hydrological data, and modelling techniques. Specifically it describes likely trajectories for river flows and groundwater levels on a monthly basis, with particular focus on the next three months.
