A hackathon is an event in which computer programmers and others involved in software development, including graphic designers, interface designers and project managers, collaborate intensively on software projects. On behalf of the partnership, the Met Office sponsored Geohack ahead of the international conference of the Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial (FOSS4G) community in Nottingham in September 2013.

A key objective of the Geohack was to promote and support the use of ESSP partner organisation data within the ‘hacker community’, especially data provided free at point of use; this was achieved, with the majority of the challenges using data from the partners.

A total of 12 challenges were proposed by ‘challenge leads’ from both partners and organisations outside of ESSP. Approximately 50 attendees spent two days working in teams on 8 of the challenges, developing ideas and writing code. Outputs included a number of websites, demonstrators and in some cases, prototype smartphone applications. The winning team, ‘Eco-cache’, developed an interface for children to collect information about the environment. Many of the challenge leads are continuing to work with the geohack teams to further develop the output from the event.
