Hazards

Slope stability – will the slopes collapse and cause danger to persons and property?

Surface water flooding – are the drainage arrangements adequate to prevent flooding during heavy rainfall?

Groundwater rebound – to what level will the groundwater rise following the end of quarrying and how might it effect any afteruse? Also will the groundwater levels in residual ponds etc. vary?

Settlement of the ground surface – key items of concern are whether any backfill within the quarry has been properly and uniformly compacted and whether there are buried steps or benches beneath any fill within the quarry that may cause problems for any built development or installed services.

Lagoons – these may represent a long-term hazard unless the structure has been properly capped so that there is no risk to people, equipment or vehicles travelling over the former lagoon.
