Call for Participation

The Technology Theme of the NERC Oceans 2025 programme holds occasional workshops on areas of broad interest to the engineers and technologists in the Centres contributing to Oceans 2025, but also to others in NERC. Previous workshops have been on Small AUVs and Gliders and on Communications. The theme of the forthcoming workshop — ‘Energy and Power for Remote Instrumentation’ — is of widespread interest to the NERC Technology community, spanning batteries for autonomous underwater vehicles to use of renewable energy to power instruments in the Polar Regions. These workshops are not ‘death by PowerPoint’, but rather an opportunity for technical discussion and the sharing of lessons learned among practitioners.

This Call for Participation is to seek topics and contributors to the workshop. A programme will be constructed around the responses. Topics might include:

  • Batteries
    • Primary, secondary, performance in service
    • Battery management, “fuel gauging”
    • Freighting, disposal, recycling
  • Energy from the environment
    • Wind, wave, solar, thermal …
  • Fuel cells
