Marine Multibeam Backscatter Data from around the UK (2005 Onwards)

Dataset description

The British Geological Survey (BGS) holds an archive of multibeam backscatter data from BGS, Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) and other organisations. BGS is the MEDIN (Marine Environmental Data Information Network) Data Archive Centre (DAC) for Geology, Geophysics and Backscatter. BGS works with the partner DAC for bathymetry at the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) to archive backscatter data mainly from the MCA Civil Hydrography Programme (CHP). Where processed backscatter exists, BGS will make this available. Raw bathymetric data (where it contains a backscatter component) is also available on request for the purpose of producing backscatter (requires specialist expertise/software). Backscatter data is useful for seabed characterisation for geological and habitat mapping.

Varies by survey, most BGS data will be open. Other data may be restricted. Where it is available online, data owned by BGS (and some other organisations) will be made freely available under the Open Government Licence. Data which is not available online may be subject to a distribution charge.
