GeoIndex provides a map based index to datasets that BGS have collected or have obtained from other sources. The site allows users to search for information about BGS data collections covering the UK and in some cases, the UK continental shelf. Access is free, the interface is easy to use, and it has been developed to enable users to check coverage of different types of data and find out some background information about the data. The index shows the extents of available dataset coverage in Great Britain and the surrounding seas, drawn against a topographical map background. The spatial data are grouped into themes holding related data together in manageable-sized units for sensible querying by any end-users. The datasets within this theme relate to the BGS G-BASE programme (Geochemical Baseline Survey of the Environment) as well as BGS/DTI Minerals Programme data-sets. G-BASE is undertaking a systematic geochemical survey of the United Kingdom, both within the rural and urban environment. The Mineral Reconnaissance Programme (MRP), funded by the DTI, carried out baseline mineral exploration in Great Britain between 1972 and 1997. It has been subsumed into the new BGS Minerals Programme, also funded by the DTI. Within this theme data is held on the geochemistry of drainage stream sediments, panned concentrates, soil, deep overburden, rock and borehole samples. Layers within this theme also show the boundaries of geochemical atlas areas and the location of urban geochemical reports and MRP reports.
Free access. The usual BGS licensing terms and conditions apply to external use of the data.
