This is a metadata index of all the geophysical surveys recorded by BGS. A geophysical survey in this context is a survey which collects seismic, sonar or potential field data (gravity and magnetic). It includes surveys conducted by BGS and other organisations (for example, the British Institutions Reflection Profiling Syndicate - BIRPS). The index holds information at different levels: survey level, line level and shot-point level. The index does not include surveys shot by the hydrocarbons industry. The bulk of the surveys were conducted in the late 1960s, 1970s and 1980s and 1990's with ongoing additions each year. The distribution of survey lines is very variable, but, in general, there is a regional geophysical survey line spaced about every 5 - 10km across the entire UK Continental Shelf. In some localised areas the line density is much higher. The survey-level metadata were manually entered via forms into the index. Line and point metadata, have in most cases have been imported from the ship navigation systems, although for some older surveys the data have been entered manually from paper navigtaion records. The survey data is applicable to a wide range of uses including environmental, geotechnical, geophysical and geological studies.
