Coastal-marine sample station and borehole analyses

Dataset description

The results of analyses made on samples collected at BGS marine sample stations are stored in an Oracle database. A sample station in this context is the site of a sea-bed sample/core or observation. It includes sea-bed samples, shallow cores and geotechnical-type boreholes, but not hydrocarbon wells. There are basically 2 types of sample stations - those occupied during BGS mapping projects and those resulting from projects conducted by other governmental, academic or commercial organisations. The analyses data relate mainly to samples collected by BGS and in most cases result from the analysis of the sea-bed component. Typical data types are PSA (particle size analysis), carbonate content and element geochemistry. Some geotechnical data are recorded for the near-surface deposits. The sample stations with such data are located on the UKCS (United Kingdom Continental Shelf) and surrounding slope area including some around Rockall. The bulk of the sample stations were occupied in the late 1960s, 1970s and 1980s and early 1990's with the analyses being made shortly afterwards. There are very few additions to the data sets in recent years. The data are applicable to a wide range of uses including environmental, geotechnical and geological studies.
