Pick up a pebble on a beach and hold the story of the Earth in your hand!
It may have pretty colours; it may glint in the sun.
When wet, you may see more clearly those strange and wonderful textures and patterns.
Pebbles are waterworn stones no larger than a tennis ball and no smaller than a small pea.
They have started life by being broken from the cliffs, or brought down to the sea by rivers. Some may even be man-made.
All the pebbles featured have been picked up from beaches. They show different colours, shapes and internal features which catch your eye. They also include the main varieties of rocks.
