This table provides expansions of the location and elevation accuracy codes used in the Well Data table (WELL_DATA). A primary key constraint has been included.

DIC_ADD_COLLTITLE

A dictionary table of metadata collection titles. Provides values for ISO metadata element no. 371 collective title. This object is a copy of the dictionary in the DGSM schema and is now obsolete; the BGS table DIC_MET_COLLECTION should be used instead.

DIC_ALTERATION

A process (or result of a process) leading to modification of the fabric, composition or other physical or chemical property of a pre-existing rock or sediment.

DIC_APPROX_FACING

Dictionary containing the approximate facing directions recorded in the field, to assist subsequent accurate determination of facing direction by stereonet.

DIC_APPROX_VERGENCE

Dictionary containing the approximate vergence direction, in the horizontal plane, recorded in the field.

DIC_ARTIF_FORM

Corporate dictionary used by the GSD application.

DIC_AXIAL_PLANE_ATT

Dictionary of fold axis, expressed as a plunge and azimuth

DIC_BABE

Codes describing the nature of the base of beds in a borehole, eg. Fault, Unconformity. Subset of DIC_BASE_BED.

DIC_BASE_BED

Codes describing the nature of the base of beds in a borehole, eg. Fault, Unconformity.

DIC_BASE_COLOUR

A dictionary of Colours - used as base colour in BGS Full Colour dictionary.

DIC_BEDDING_TYPE

Purpose - To describe the type of primary sedimentary bedding where dip and dip azimuth are measured at a single point as part of geological survey. The type recorded will enable selection for display on a map, plotting on a stereonet or symbolisation on a map, as in the BGS digital geological mapping system. Content - Types of sedimentary bedding surface at which the orientation of that surface are commonly measured or calculated and also standard values where the type of bedding was not entered (not recorded), not available (can not be recorded) or not applicable.

DIC_BGS_FULL_COLOUR

A dictionary of BGS standard full colour descriptors such as [Red, Pinkish, Light], [Blue, Purplish, Dark] etc. Each description is broken down into 3 fields: Base Colour (eg Red), Colour Qualifier (eg Pinkish), and Shade (eg Light). Each colour must have a Munsell full code associated with it and this is termed the `Median` munsell code since it points to a `median` where a BGS colour can cover many Munsell definitions.

DIC_CMD_PAPER_FORM_TYPE

Simple categorisation of BGS-held Coastal and Marine Data Sheets by their paper form and content (information). Includes SHEET_ORDER, which is the order of preference for the retrieval (display) of the Data Sheets for a given location.

DIC_COLOUR_QUALIFIER

A dictionary of qualifiers as applied to Base colours eg Reddish. The codes used here must be the same as their equivalents in Base Colour dictionary ie Red and Reddish; Blue and Bluish are same in code form in both tables.

DIC_COLOUR_RELATIONSHIP

A dictionary describing the relationships between colours as applied to a Borehole section property list where more than one colour property is entered. Egs: Laminations, lenses etc. (Note the close similarities with Sedimentary (micro) structures).

DIC_COLOUR_STRENGTH

A dictionary of colour strengths (saturation levels) applied to full colour descriptions eg: Brilliant Blue; Moderate Red etc.

Dictionary of generalized dip of a surface based on estimation or inference.

DIC_GEOCHRON

Table holding codes, names and radiometric ages of geochronological intervals that can be used in BGS databases. It is this table that acts as the domain constraint on corporate data tables.

DIC_GEOCHRON_AGE_TYPE

Dictionary to constrain age types used in DIC_GEOCHRON. E.g. definite; interpolated; approximate.

DIC_GEOCHRON_INTERIM

An "interim" version of DIC_GEOCHRON. This table holds all the entries in DIC_GEOCHRON plus some deprecated entries (old codes that should no longer be used). This is so that data tables that still use deprecated codes will continue to function. This is the table that data tables still using deprecated geochronological codes should reference. Table structure the same as DIC_GEOCHRON.

DIC_GEOCHRON_RANK

Dictionary to constrain ranks of geochronological intervals used in DIC_GEOCHRON. E.g. Eon; Era; Period; Epoch; Age.

DIC_GEOCHRON_SCHEME

Dictionary to constrain geochronological schemes used in GEOCHRON_JOIN. E.g. BGS approved geochronology; British onshore Quaternary chronostratigraphy; British offshore Quaternary chronostratigraphy.

DIC_GEOSAURUS_SUB

Dictionary of internal bed structures. It is used in constructing the view DIC_PROPERTY_TYPE_V1, which in turn is used by the GeoEntry borehole geology data entry application.

DIC_KEYPHRASE

This is the central table of the BGS geoscience thesaurus. It contains approximately 6000 descriptor terms for concepts in the geoscience and related subjects. Some entries have scope notes to further explain the term. The original source of the data was the Australian Mineral Foundation?s thesaurus of geoscience; some terms have been added or updated to suit BGS needs and the content will continue to be updated as required. Related tables hold the synonyms to descriptor terms, hierarchical relationships, conceptual (?see also?) relationships and lapsed (deprecated) term replacements.

Dictionary table containing codes for use of mineral sites past and present, e.g. active, historic, landfill.

A dictionary of Munsell Base Colours and their associated ordinal position on the Munsell Colour `sphere`/`disc`.

A X-reference table mapping Munsell Base Colours (eg YR for YellowRed) to BGS Base Colours (Yellow, Red in the example quoted).

Dictionary of the types of palaeogeological terranes. E.g. Microplate, microcontinent, continent.

DIC_PAL_FOSSIL_COMMENT

This table defines comments on fossil occurrences that can be used in the Borehole Geology properties table BH_GEOLOGY_PROPERTY. It is used (along with other dictionaries) in the Oracle view DIC_PROPERTY_TYPE_V1 which assembles the list of property types and values offered to the user by the GeoEntry borehole log coding application.

DIC_PAL_TAXON

A dictionary of fossil groups. NB 1: This has different design to the first Palaeosaurus version. NB 2: This will need to be replaced eventually with a hierarchical lexicon of fossil taxonomy (of which this table could form the heart).

DIC_PLANR_STRU_T

The class of planar structure, eg, bedding, crenulation cleavage.

DIC_PLATE_BOUND_TYPE

Dictionary of the types of plate boundaries. E.g. Spreading centre, subduction zone, transform margin

DIC_PRIORITY

Dictionary table containing valid priorities for the software error reporting system (from very high to very low).

DIC_PRODUCT_FILE_EXTENSION

File extensions for files in the table MODEL_LOB_STORE_FILE, which are product specific. Eg: EarthVision has extns: 2GRPT=2D Grid data points; 2GRD=2D Grid data defined as Origin + Offsets.

DIC_PROPERTY_TYPE

Provides constraints on the property table.

DIC_QUARRY_PRODUCT

Dictionary table containing a listing of quarry products. (e.g Agricultural Fertilisers, building stone, concrete blocks, dry stone walling etc.)

DIC_QUARTER

Dictionary; used as a foreign key constraint to control values input to the field QUARTER - meaning, the National Grid Quarter Sheet quadrant. This input was previously validated via trigger checks - these being removed as bad practice.

DIC_RCS_AMOUNT

Part of version 3 of the BGS Rock Classification Scheme. This dictionary holds codes for the amount of single lithologies that make up a composite lithology.

DIC_RCS_STATUS

Dictionary table used to validate field RCS_STATUS in the table Dic_Rock_NameV3. This validation was previously controlled by a check constraint. This now removed.

DIC_REFERENCE_TYPE

Dictionary tble containing codes and descriptions for reference types

DIC_ROCK_ALL

The entire version 3 of the BGS Rock Classification Scheme. This table is populated directly from the 3 supplying tables (BGS.ROCK_NAME_V3, BGS.ROCK_COMPOSITE and BGS.DIC_ROCK_DUMMY). All entries in these supplying tables are also held in BGS.DIC_ROCK_ALL. NOTE: no user has anything other than SELECT access to BGS.DIC_ROCK_ALL - its contents are entirely controlled by triggers on the supplying tables.

A table to hold the entirety of the RCS codes (from DIC_ROCK_SIGMA) together with an indication of whether those codes have been used or not on DigMap.There is no insert or delete permissions on this table. These functions are controlled via a trigger on DIC_ROCK_ALL and a procedure RCS_POPULATE_SIGMA_P1 Carto staff (via TONYM) have update permission on the DigMap fields (i.e. USED_ON_1M, USED_ON_625K, USED_ON_250K, USED_ON_100K, USED_ON_50K, USED_ON_25K, USED_ON_10K)

DIC_SCAN_QUALITY

The quality of the scan. This will be constrained to 'Good', 'Bad' or 'Not Entered' with a default of 'Not Entered'.

DIC_SCAN_SOURCE_QUALITY

The quality of the original paper copy. This will be constrained to 'Good', 'Bad' or 'Not Entered' with a default of 'Not Entered'.

DIC_SECTION_GEOMETRY

Way in which Section data has been recorded: Polygons, Polylines, or mixture of both.

DIC_SECTION_SOURCE

Types of Section in terms of their Origin. Eg: Cartographic (Map Marginalia), Seismic Survey etc.

DIC_SEISMIC_SRC

Dictionary that identifies the source used to obtain the seismic data.

DIC_SEISMIC_STRAT

Named seismic stratigraphic unit.

Table containing the sheet numbers and names of BGS 1:50K (formerly 1-inch) geological sheets. This is an important dictionary and validation tool, referenced by various databases, including the Lexicon.

Dictionary describing the side of a line or surface, denoted by a compass octant, eg N, SW.

DIC_SLI_COLLECTION

Dictionary which identifies the collection seismic data belongs to, for example C for Coal Authority or B for BGS.

DIC_SLI_DATA_FRMT

Dictionary which identifies whether digital data are available and if seismic data were received in digital format or if it was scanned or vectorised.

DIC_SLI_LINE_PART

Dictionary used where a seismic line is divided into more than one part and each part is labelled separately (e.g. BP-79A, B, C or I,II, III etc)

Dictionary to identify whether the survey is 2D or 3D.

This dictionary contains codes used to qualitatively describe the abundance of suspended solids in a sample of water

DIC_TECT_FOLIATION

Type of secondary (tectonic or metamorphic) foliation (?planar fabric?).

DIC_TRAY_SIZE

Dictionary which lists different tray sizes (small, large etc.) in the NDGC tray store.

DIC_TRAY_TYPE

Dictionary which lists tray types (cardboard or wooden box etc.) in the NDGC tray store.

DIC_UNIT_OF_MEASURE

Dictionary of measurement units used for a specific property; e.g. metres, centimetres, inches, chains, fathoms, kilograms, tons, pints, quarts, gallons, litres, square metres, cubic metres.

DIC_UPDATE_FREQUENCY

A dictionary of valid Frequencies of Update of Datasets.

DIC_VEGETATION

Dictionary of vegetation; plant life of a region; ground cover life forms,structure or any other specific botanical or geographic characteristics. To be ratified by DMG(mln, 07/04/2008).

DIC_VEIN_FORM

Dictionary of vein morphologies in the surface of measurement, eg planar, en echelon, conjugate.

DIC_VEIN_NAME

The name of a vein shown on a map.

DIC_VERTICAL_SCOPE

Dictionary of qualitative vertical extents, used to describe the vertical extent of geological information in a map, section, dataset, model etc.

DIC_VST_DETMAND

Dictionary of Determinands - e.g. LOI450, plastic limit, Cu. Langmuir and Freundlich KDs (for each element) should be included here as separate determinands. Note that if a determinand has to be quoted in a number of units then each determinand/units combination will have a separate entry in this dictionary

DIC_VST_DETMAND_QUAL

Dictionary of determinand qualifiers i.e. <. =, >

DIC_WAYUP

Inferred direction of superposition of stratiform deposits.

DIC_WF_LINK_CATEGORY

Dictionary of categories within the 3DMS (ex. DGSM) WorkFlow, used to logically group items within the workflow. Used as datasource for intranet based 3DMS WorkFlow application (http://bgsintranet/projects/dgsm/building.html).

DIC_WF_SECTION

A dictionary of project (e.g. DGSM, SIGMA etc.) workflow Actions (title, description, type and status). Action to be taken as part of completion of a `Workflow Stage`, may contain one or more `WorkFlow Action Resource Group` (DIC_WF_SUBSECTION).

DIC_WF_SUBSECTION

Table of project (e.g. DGSM, SIGMA etc.) workflow Action Resource Groups (title and status) Logical grouping of resources to aid in completion of a `Workflow Action` (DIC_WF_SECTION).

DIC_WF_URL_TEXT

Dictionary containing the text for workflow sections (e.g. DGSM, SIGMA) URL links.

DIC_WOBE

Information about mineral workings encountered by a borehole.

DIC_WSTK

Information about water strikes in a borehole.

DIC_XML_ATTRIBUTE_TEXTS

This dictionary table contains the valid XML attribute texts (for NGDF profile), coded by Metadata Guidelines ID and an entry no.

DIC_XML_TO_DM_DICXREF

This Xref table cross references Dic XML Attribute Texts to the appropriate BGS Discovery Metadata Dictionary codes. It maps BGS codes to the equivalent XML Attribute texts.Note that an XML attribute text/value can have many equivalent BGS codes.Lack of an entry, resulting in no mapping across from BGS Dictionary to XML attribute text will result in data being IGNORED when the extraction program is run. This table is critical in the picking up of XML atrribute text values from Discovery Metadata dictionary values/codes.

DIC_XYSOURCE

Dictionary table constraining the values entered into the XYSOURCE (source of spatial coordinates) field in the new BGS.BOREHOLE table.

DIC_XY_SYSTEM

Dictionary of XY coordinate systems. These should be the values in the EPSG system. This dictionary is likely to be replaced by a fuller corporate system based on the EPSG system with additions.

Dictionary table containing the valid codes for LOG.

This table holds details of BGS's lexicon child codes and is part of a system that is used to export parts of the BGS Lexicon for external publication on the Internet.

QTY_DICT

Provides expansions of the hydrocarbon quantities-found codes used in the SSD hydrocarbonds test results table.

Dictionary table for (reference points) REFPT codes.

SOUR_DICT

This table provides expansions of the data source codes used in the Surface Depths table. In version 2 a primary key has been added.Table.

STAT_DICT

Provides expansions of the hydrocarbon well status codes used in the SSD hydrocarbon test table.

SUBST_DICT

Provides expansions of the hydrocarbon substance codes used in the Stratigraphic Surfaces Database (SSD) hydrocarbons test results table.

This table provides expansions of the surface identifcation codes used in the surface depths table. In version 2 a primary key constraint has been added.

TYPE_DICT

This table provides expansions of the surface type codes used in the Surface Depths table. In version 2 a primary key constraint has been added.Table.

WELL_DICT

This table provides expansions of the well drilling purpose codes used in the Well Data Table (WELL_DATA). A primary key constraint has been included.

WORLD_GAZETTEER_DIC

A lookup dictionary which expands the CODE field in WORLD_GAZETTEER. Data are derived from the Digital Chart of the World (DCW).
