Abstract This report describes the British Geological Survey's (BGS) Geochemical Baseline Survey of the Environment (G-BASE) project summer field campaign of 2012, carried out between 9th June and 31st August in south west England. Geochemical sampling was undertaken as part of the plan to complete G-BASE systematic regional sampling by March 2014. The summer 2012 fieldwork was carried out by two teams - Team A and Team B - which operated as a single team during the first week. During this first week there were five staff members and nine voluntary workers (VWs). After this, each team operated with two members of staff and nine VWs for the remaining 11 weeks. During the 12-week summer field season a total area of c. 9600 km2 was covered - all of Cornwall, most of Devon, and some of Somerset. In total 3426 stream sediment samples, 3768 stream water samples, 3240 vegetation samples, and 83 topsoil samples were collected. Sampling procedures were carried out in accordance with the second edition of the G-BASE field procedures manual. This report summarises the work carried out during the 2012 field season, including the logistics. It serves as a record of difficulties encountered in the field and documents health and safety incidents in the field; it subsequently makes recommendations for future field campaigns.
