| Author statement | Original geological survey on the one-inch scale by H. Baueman, W. Whitaker, T.R. Polwhele, R. Trench, W.H. Penning, H.W. Bristow, H.B. Woodward, F.J. Bennett, W.A.E. Ussher, J.H. Blake and C.E. Hawkins. Published as Old Series Sheets 1 and 7, 1861-1868. Drift added in 1871-1876. Surveyed on the 1:10 560 scale by C.E.N. Bromehead, J.A. Howe, T.I. Pocock, A.C.G. Cameron, A.H. Noble, R.W. Pocock, H.G. Dines and T. Robertson, 1889-1922. Minor amendments by S. Buchan in 1935 and S.W. Hester in 1949. Northeast margin resurveyed by R.A. Ellison in 1977, and central London revised by F.G. Berry in 1979-1982. Reconstituted on to the 1:10 000 scale with amendments by P.J. Strange and S.J. Booth in 1991-1992. Made ground compiled by R.T. Mogdridge in 1992. Interpretation of deep geological section by T.C. Pharoah and P.J. Strange. This edition compiled by P.J. Strange, 1992. R.A.B.
