Author statement Original geological survey at 1:63 360 scale by H.W. Bristow, published on Old Series sheets 16 and 17 respectively in 1850 and 1855. Survey of the Jurassic and Cretaceous strata at the 1:10 560 scale by A. Strahan between 1889 and 1890, and revision of the Palaeogene strata by C. Reid in 1894 and 1895. New Series 1:63 360 scale sheets 342 and 343 were published hand-coloured respectively in 1895 and 1896 and colour printed in 1904. A new edition of Sheet 342 was published in 1949 and minor amendments were incorporated in Sheet 343, published in 1954. Sheets 342 and 343 (incorporating the eastem part of Sheet 342) were reprinted without geological revision at the 1:50 000 scale in 1974 and 1976 respectively. Resurveyed at the 1:10 000 scale by C.R. Bristow, A.J. Newell, E.C. Freshney, C.M. Barton and R.K. Westhead in 1986 and 1995 to 1997. P.J. Strange, Regional Geologist. Marine geology by A. Crosby and C.D.R. Evans, based on BGS and University College London surveys conducted 1960-79 and data provided by the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office. Seismic and structural interpretation by G.A. Kirby, D.J. Evans and C.M. Barton. ECC Ball Clays provided extensive borehole data from the Palaeogene sucession.
