Routes to BGS Murchison House
From Waverley Train Station
By Taxi - The taxi rank is situated inside the station itself. The journey time to Murchison House (ask the driver for King's Buildings, West Mains Road) is about 10-15 minutes and costs around £6-£8.
By Bus - Exit the station, either using the ramp to Waverley Bridge or the Waverley Steps to Princes Street. If using the ramp, turn left and walk up to Princes street. At Princes Street, either:
- Turn right and right again (at the Balmoral Hotel), cross the road (North Bridge) and take Lothian Region Transport http://lothianbuses.com/find-your-bus/timetables.html bus No. 3, 7, 8, or 31 south to Cameron Toll, then follow the map from there. The journey takes about 15-20 minutes and costs 80 pence (exact fare only). If in doubt where to alight, ask the driver to let you off at Craigmillar Park road which is just before Cameron Toll shopping centre.
- Turn left and walk along Princes Street until you come to the
National Art Galleries, turn left into the Mound and catch LRT
bus Nos. 41 or 42. The journey time is around 15-20 minutes and
costs about 80 pence (exact fare only). Again, if in doubt where
to alight, ask the driver to let you off at
- Blackford Station, for the route 41 or West Mains Road for the route 42. From Blackford Station, walk to the traffic lights and cross West Saville Road and walk up Blackford Avenue (in the direction of the Royal Observatory), to West Mains Road. Murchison House is just after Craigmillar Park Golf Course.
- West Mains Road, for the route 42. Cross the road at the traffic lights and tirn right into west Mains Road, Murchison House is the last building on the right hand side of the road, just before the golf course.
From Edinburgh Airport
By Taxi - The taxi rank is right outside the main entrance to the airport. Taxis are assigned to customers by a taxi manager, and at peak times can mean a wait. The journey to Kings Buildings takes about 20-30 minutes depending on traffic and will cost around £20.
By Bus – The Airport bus leaves from the front of the airport every 10 minutes and takes about 25 minutes to the centre of town. The bus costs £3.00 single & £5.00 return fare and stops along the route, allowing exit on Princes Street or Waverly Bridge (terminus). Tip: Instead of waiting at the airport for a taxi, jump on the bus and ask to get off at Haymarket Railway Station, there are always taxis at the rank there (no queues), and the fare to Murchison House will be about £6.00 rather than about £20.00 from the airport.
By Car - Exit the airport and follow signs to the city centre and city bypass. Follow the signs for the city bypass heading. Stay on the bypass and exit at Lothianburn Junction, turn left at the exit and follow the main road straight in towards the centre of town. At the bottom of a long descent, Comiston Road, turn right at a set of lights (beside The Hermitage public house) and proceed along Cluny Drive, through two sets of traffic lights and bear right up Balckford Avenue which becomes West Mains Road.
Travelling by Car
The easiest approach to King's Buildings is from the City bypass, which runs around the south of the city. To get to Kings Buildings, take either the Lothainburn (see from airport by car) or the Straiton exit which after the Lothianburn exit. From there follow the signs to the city centre, pass Mortonhall Crematorium and down a long descending hill (Liberton Brae). At a set of traffic lights at the bottom of the hill and just after the traffic lights, bear left into Mayfield road. Proceed to a set of traffic lights and turn left into west Mains Road, Murchison House is reached by taking the second entrance on the left into Kings Buildings. Follow the signs to Murchison House car park. The multi story car park, like all other parking on campus is by permit only and the university will issue a parking ticket if no permit is displayed. There is parking on West Mains Road and adjoining streets but beware of some single yellow line restrictions on West Mains Road.
On foot
From Cameron Toll, cross the road, turn left then turn right up Lygon Road. At the top of this road you will have reached Mayfield Road
From Mayfield Road, cross the road at the traffic lights and turn right into West Mains Road. Follow instructions as for bus route no. 42.
