Each of the sections is presented as a series of themes such as:

Base data

Land quality and groundwater

Hazards

Resources

Offshore and coastal

To view the theme pages, click on the section heading of interest to see a live list of themes in that section on the left-hand margin. On each theme page there is a description of the theme's importance with information about the detailed source data from which it was derived. Small thumbnail maps illustrating the coverage of the detailed data that the BGS holds are accessible via an icon on the upper right-hand part of the theme page. An inset map shows what the detailed information looks like at full resolution. A movie clip is available for many of the themes—click on the camera icon at the foot of the page.

For every theme a map is available of either onshore UK or of the UK Continental Shelf Designated Areas showing small-scale generalisations, i.e. an overview of the much more detailed information available from the BGS. These maps are a WebGIS application—instructions are given under the WebGIS icon.

This website contains all of the information available in the Britain Beneath our Feet atlas and also allows the user to search and interrogate the data, to look at the separate components of the individual themes or to combine them.
