BGS Delivery Plan to 2014

Delivery plan report

This Delivery Plan to 2014 describes the priority science and information activities through which BGS will address the six challenges of the BGS Science Strategy 2009–2014, and the strategic priorities that will inform detailed annual programme planning.

Our strategy and priorities are responsive to national needs, and our plans will therefore evolve and develop during the period.

The BGS Advisory Committee , BGS Senior Leadership Team, and advisory bodies for Science, Information and Knowledge Exchange, and Commercialisation, Marketing and Grantsmanship will play important guiding roles in this strategic evolution.

Background

In March 2009 the British Geological Survey (BGS) launched its strategy Applied geoscience for our changing Earth (BGS Science Strategy 2009–2014).

The strategy is an integral part of the NERC Strategy 'Next Generation Science for Planet Earth and responds to the objectives and priorities set out in the NERC Strategy's seven science, and four organisational themes.

'Applied geoscience for our changing Earth' sets out six major geoscience challenges for BGS and its partners:

  1. acquire, interpret and enhance the UK geoscience knowledge base and make it accessible and interoperable
  2. improve the communication of geoscience knowledge so that it can better support policy and decision-making by government and society
  3. enhance external partnerships to improve the quality, reach and impact of our science
  4. apply a whole-systems approach to our science and improve understanding of the nature and sustainable use of natural resources and the potential impact of hazards
  5. understand, quantify and predict the response of the Earth's 'zone of human interaction' to future environmental change
  6. increase the economic impact and relevance of our work
