Julian started work for UK Business Development in 2008. He is an environmental scientist with an HNC in Applied Chemistry, MSc Integrated Environmental Control from Nottingham Trent University and a MRes in Contaminated Land Management from Nottingham University. He has worked at BGS for over 21 years and is currently Head of Business Development with a core responsibility for the development of markets in geoscience technologies and laboratory analysis. |
Wendy Masterson, Business Development Team

Wendy joined the BGS in January 2004. She provides the essential administrative support and back-office services for all the Business Development area to run smoothly. Wendy provides support with different types of activities ranging from, collating bids and expressions of interest for externally-funded UK and overseas projects and undertakes various IT-related tasks. |

Jenny works with the teams above to identify opportunities and develop commercial and externally-funded projects. Jenny joined the Business Development team in 2003 with a Business Studies degree, and obtained a Marketing Professional postgraduate diploma in 2005. She has expertise in event management, market research, branding and corporate marketing. |

Science grants coordinator
Originally trained as a geoscientist, Vicky gained both her BSc and PhD from Durham University, specialising in geochemistry and volcanology. She joined BGS in 1995 since when she has held a variety of laboratory, administrative and managerial roles. Her current role is to assist and support BGS scientists and IT specialists in identifying and capitalising on opportunities to obtain grants funding. Specifically the role includes identifying and publicising grant funding opportunities (market intelligence) for BGS from sources including UK Research Councils; other UK agencies, the European Commission and other European and international organisations, assisting with developing research consortia, proposal writing, submissions systems and application procedures . Vicky is also the BGS main contact for Eurogeosurveys (EGS). |

David Allen (WL), Business Development Team

Business manager for groundwater resources
David joined the BGS in 1978 after graduating in Natural Sciences at Cambridge University in 1976 followed by an MSc in Engineering Hydrology at Newcastle University in 1978. Until 1997 he worked as a hydrogeologist both in the UK and overseas, specialising in field and laboratory investigation of aquifer physical properties. Since 1997 he has been the Water Sector Business Manager for BGS while continuing to lead hydrogeological studies (for example he is currently managing BGS investigations into groundwater-surface water interaction). |

Hugh was appointed UKBD Sector Manager for Scotland in 2002, working mainly with local authorities, government agencies and the Scottish Government. Since 2008 he has been Team Leader – Responsive Surveys Scotland, and deputy to the Chief Geologist, Scotland. He is a Chartered Geologist, Chartered Scientist, Council Member of the Association for Geographic Information (AGI) and Chair of AGI Scotland. After graduating from the University of Aberdeen, Hugh worked as a geologist offshore oil industry in Europe and the Middle East. He joined BGS in 1986 as a biostratigrapher following a return to Aberdeen for postgraduate research on Jurassic palynology. He transferred to the Edinburgh office in 1994 where he served as a field geologist in central and southern Scotland, Morocco and the Isle of Man. |
Howard Johnson (MH), Business Development Team

Business manager for marine geoscience
Howard Johnson graduated in 1975 and joined the British Geological Survey. After six years with the UK Land Survey, he transferred to the BGS Hydrocarbons Unit in Edinburgh, under contract to the UK Department of Energy. During the late 1980s, he conducted petroleum geoscience assessments in the South Pacific on behalf of the Commonwealth Fund for Technical Co-operation. Upon his return to BGS, his work has included published studies of North Sea, East Irish Sea and Atlantic margin basins. He currently leads the BGS Continental Margins team and his research interests include the nature and origin of compression within passive margins. He is a Chartered Geologist and Chartered Scientist. |

Sue has worked within the Natural Environment Research Council (of which the BGS is a component Research Centre) since 1986 joining BGS in 2001. She has a PgDip in Management from the University of the west of England. Her work and experience in NERC/BGS includes Data Management, Data Base Administration, Research Grant Administration, Financial Management and Administration of major international tenders and contracts. Currently her Role is both as International Liaison Manager and Market Analysis Manager for Business Development. |

Market Analysis Team
David has worked with the BGS for 41 years, largely in an information capacity. He began his career in the Library in 1971 when it was located at the Geological Museum in London. In 1980 he moved to the Mineral Intelligence Unit where he worked on the Mineral Index, a bibliographic database begun in 1918 and containing some 400 000 references on worldwide economic geology. This was followed by stints with the National Geoscience Records Centre, the Mineral Statistics Section (extracting data on worldwide mineral production), and providing secretarial support to the BGS Directorate. He has worked for BGS International since 1998 and is currently responsible for documenting BGS international activity and working on bid proposals. |

At the start of 2009 Linda joined the UK Business Development team as Events Manager. Linda was awarded a diploma in event management, with distinction, in 2011. Previously, she managed BGS mineral statistics projects and the BGS-hosted MineralsUK website. She obtained her honours degree in geology and MSc in Industrial Mineralogy from Leicester University. |

Mike joined NERC in 2009 working on the commercialisation of innovations at the BGS. In 2012 he transferred to the UK Business Development function of the BGS maintaining his previous responsibilities plus management of data sales to partners seeking to develop data products and services for the commercial sector. He has a BA in Geography from Hull University. Mikes background is in the commercial sector having spent 20 years working in buying, marketing, store and area management roles with Boots. His previous position was in commercial airport management working at Birmingham Airport where he had responsibility for income generation from car parking, taxis, on site advertising, negotiating retail/catering concessionaire trading terms and co-ordinating the fit out of new trading partners.
