Stockdale Group

Computer Code: STK Preferred Map Code: Stk
Status Code: Full
Age range: Hirnantian Age (OH) — Llandovery Epoch (SL)
Lithological Description: The term Stockdale Group was introduced by Kneller et al. (1994) to include the mudstone and siltstone sequence of latest Hirnantian and Llandovery age which occurs throughout the Lake District, Cross Fell, Cautley and Dent, and Craven inliers. Uppermost Ashgill (Hirnantian in part) and Llandovery.
Definition of Lower Boundary: The lower boundary of the group coincides with the base of the Skelgill Mudstone Formation.
Definition of Upper Boundary: The upper boundary is defined by the base of the overlying Brathay Mudstone Formation (Tranearth Group).
Thickness: Thickness in the southern Lake District is 40 to 120 m, whereas up to 140 m are present in the Howgill Fells, but only 35 m in the Craven inliers.
Geographical Limits: Lake District, Cross Fell, Cautley and Dent, and Craven inliers.
Parent Unit: Windermere Supergroup (WIN)
