| Lithological Description: | Breccias, sandstones, mudstones (red-beds) component groups: Mercia Mudstone Group, Sherwood Sandstone Group, Aylesbeare Mudstone Group and Exeter Group. NOTE: In northeast England New Red Sandstone included only Sherwood Sandstone and Mercia Mudstone groups: the Magnesian Limestone was used as a term of equal status. In the northwest the map clearly shows the unit extended down to the unconformable contact with Coal Measures, and so included the Permian red beds. In the south-west likewise. | ||
| Definition of Lower Boundary: | See definitions of base of component formations of the Exeter Group and Aylesbeare Mudstone Group. Rests unconformably on folded Devonian and Carboniferous Rocks. | ||
| Definition of Upper Boundary: | Overlain by Penarth Group. (Triassic/Jurassic). | ||
| Thickness: | Up to c.2000m | ||
| Geographical Limits: | Originally in Scotland; range extended as described. All red-bed sequences of Permian and Triassic age in southwest England. Probably applicable also to northwest England and Scotland, but in northeast England can only be applied to beds overlying the Magnesian Limestone. See Conybeare and Phillips, 1822. | ||
