Appleby Group

Computer Code: APY Preferred Map Code: APY
Status Code: Full
Age range: Permian Period (P) — Permian Period (P)
Lithological Description: Red, aeolian cross-bedded millet-seed sandstone, fluviatile sandstone and breccias ('Brockram') interbedded in varying proportions. In the Collyhurst Sandstone and correlatives grey, white and pale brown colours are also common and breccias are rare. Some interbedded red mudstones are present locally. NOTE: Group includes Penrith Sandstone, Brockram, Rougholme Point Conglomerate, Collyhurst Sandstone, Lockarbriggs Sandstone Formation and Dowell Breccia Formation.
Definition of Lower Boundary: Strongly unconformable mainly on a range of Carboniferous strata, locally on older formations.
Definition of Upper Boundary: Taken at point in sequence where sandstone becomes subordinate to mudstones, siltstones, carbonates and evaporites of the overlying Cumbrian Coast Group (St Bees Evaporites or Manchester Marls formations).
Thickness: Typically shows large variations over short distances.
Geographical Limits: Extends from northern part of Solway Basin in the north to northeast part of Cheshire Basin in the south and at least as far west as the Isle of Man and the eastern Irish Sea (Jackson and others, 1987).
