Overview

Data is provided to assist local authorities dealing with the implementation of Part IIA (Contaminated Land) of the Environmental Protection Act 1990. The legislation relies on the identification of a pollution linkage between a potential sources and a receptor. These data listed can be loaded to the users GIS to help identification of pathways, assist decision support and for use in site prioritization tools. Geological indicators of flooding

Geological maps show where all the floodplains and coastal plains in Britain are located and therefore the main areas at greatest risk of flooding. The map shows areas vulnerable to two main types of flooding: inland (river floodplains) and coastal/estuarine.

The map is based on observation of the types of geological deposit present and does not take into account any man-made influences such as house building or flood protection schemes. It also does not take into account low-lying areas where flooding could occur but where there are no materials indicating flooding in the geological past.

The BGS Geological indicators of flooding data should be regarded as complementary to, and not a replacement for, existing flood risk maps such as those provided by the Environment Agency.

More detailed data can be obtained from BGS and site specific information will be available in the near future.

Top Soil

This layer shows data collected mainly by the Geochemical Baseline Survey of the Environment (G-BASE) programme.

Geochemical data are available for soil samples for the Humber-Trent and East Anglia atlas areas (see the Geochemical atlas areas layer). Samples for East Midlands and part of Southeast England have been collected and are currently either undergoing analysis or data conditioning. More than twenty urban areas have also been sampled and top soil analyses are available for these urban areas (Belfast, Cardiff, Corby, Coventry, Derby, Doncaster, Glasgow, Hull, Ipswich, Leicester, Lincoln, Manchester, Mansfield, Northampton, Nottingham, Peterborough, Scunthorpe, Sheffield, Swansea, Stoke, Telford, Wolverhampton and York).

Regional samples are collected at an average density of one site per 2 square kilometres, urban sampling is at a density of 4 samples per square kilometre. Top soil samples are collected at a depth of 5 - 20cm. It is sieved through a 2mm mesh and milled to less than 150 microns. The data include analyses for some or all of the following elements by XRFS: Mg, P, K, Ca, Ti, Mn, Fe, V, Cr, Co, Ba, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, As, Se, Rb, Sr, Y, Zr, Nb, Mo, Pb, Bi, Th, U, Ag, Cd, Sn, Sb, Cs, La, Ce, Ge, Sc, Se, Br, Hf, Ta, W, Tl, Te and I. Loss on Ignition (LOI) and pH (in a slurry of 0.01 M CaCl2 ) is now routinely determined on 50% of regional and all urban samples.

Profile Soil

Profile soil analyses are available from a number of BGS programmes, notably the Mineral Reconnaissance Programme (MRP) and the Geochemical Baseline Survey of the Environment (G-BASE) programme. Sampling depth and range of analytes determined is very variable for the MRP. G-BASE samples are consistently from 35 - 50 cm though since 2003 it has become routine practice in the G-BASE project to collect a top soil and deeper profile sample from the same site but only analyses the top soil and store the profile soil. This also applies in urban areas. The G-BASE profile soils were generally sieved to 150 microns before analysis and determined by XRFS for some or all of: Mg, P, K, Ca, Ti, Mn, Fe, V, Cr, Co, Ba, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, As, Se, Rb, Sr, Y, Zr, Nb, Mo, Pb, Bi, Th, U, Ag, Cd, Sn, Sb, Cs, La, Ce, Ge, Sc, Se, Br, Hf, Ta, W, Tl, Te and I.

MRP samples can include profile samples from greater than 1 meter collected using a power auger and also include till samples. The G-BASE samples are collected at a density of 1 sample per two square kilometres in rural areas and 4 samples every kilometre square in urban areas. MRP sampling was more site specific generally collecting soil samples along lines at spacing intervals generally 25 - 250 m.

Stream Sediment

G-BASE drainage sitesStream sediment samples are collected under the G-BASE programme at an average density of approximately one site per 1.5 km square. Analytical data for the minus 150 micron fraction of stream sediment samples are available for some or all of the following elements by a variety of analytical methods (now predominantly XRFS): Mg, P, K, Ca, Ti, Mn, Fe, V, Cr, Co, Ba, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, As, Se, Rb, Sr, Y, Zr, Nb, Mo, Pb, Bi, Th, U, Ag, Cd, Sn, Sb, Cs, La, Ce, Ge, Sc, Se, Br, Hf, Ta, W, Tl, Te and I.

Stream sediment samples were also collected by the now defunct MRP programme and analytical data for the minus 150 micron fraction of samples is available for a variety of elements including Ag, As, Au, Ba, Bi, Ca, Ce, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, Sn, Sr, Ti, U, V, W, Zn and Zr.

Some of the MRP samples may have undergone several stages of analysis, some for inclusion in the G-BASE project. The samples may have been assigned a different sample number but will plot at the same site.

Onshore borehole records

Records of boreholes, shafts and wells from all forms of drilling and site investigation work. Some 850 000 records dating back over 200 years and ranging from one to several thousand metres deep. Currently some 50 000 new records are being added to the collection each year. These will be included in GeoIndex each time it is updated.

A small percentage of the borehole records are held 'commercial-in-confidence' for various reasons, and cannot be released without the written permission of the originator. NGRC staff will release the data where this is possible or provide you with the information needed to contact the originator.

Please note that zero values for depth signify that the depth has not been databased or has not been made available.

There is a standard charge of £15 + VAT per borehole record with £30 + VAT minimum charge.

Site investigation reports

This is an index of site reports covering a wide range of drilling and site investigation work. Some 2000 reports include the logs from over 10 000 boreholes in addition to those held in the borehole index. The rectangles shown are drawn using the SW and NE corners of the site maps.

Aquifer Vulnerability Maps

The Soil Survey, Land Research Centre and the British Geological Survey were commissioned by the Environment Agency to prepare 53 groundwater vulnerability maps at 1:100 000 scale. These maps identify areas in which the groundwater resources require protection from potentially polluting activities. The maps are designed to be used by planners, developers, consultants and regulatory bodies to ensure that developments conform to the Policy and Practice of the Environment Agency for the protection of Groundwater.

Buy them at the BGS Internet Shop. Folded maps are no longer available. Flat maps may be purchased from the BGS at £15 each. Sheets 16,39,40, and 43 are out of print. Currently we are unable to provide scanned copies of these maps due to Copyright restrictions. Please note that these maps are based on data from the late 1980's and early 1990's. More up-to-date digital data may now be available from the Environment Agency; for more information contact your local EA office or the National Enquiry Service (08708 506506).

Water wells with water level measurements

This shows sites where regularly monitored rest water level data are available, usually covering a long time period. The data shows seasonal fluctuations in the water table and responses to periods of high or low rainfall. Retrieval costs are £7.50 per value with a minimum charge of £30 for 4 values

Water wells with aquifer property measurements

This shows sites with data available on transmissivity, storativity and discharge/drawdown. These parameters indicate the physical characteristics of the aquifer which can relate to factors such as possible storage capacities or rate of movement of water through the rock. Charges are £7.50 per site with a minimum charge of £30 for 4 sites.

Water wells

100 000 paper records of water wells, including details of lithologies, well construction, water levels and yields and water chemistry. Details lodged by drillers under statute. Water well records cost £15 per well (+VAT) with a minimum charge of £30.

Please note that zero values for the depth represent those for which the depth has yet to be entered into the database from the paper records. The columns of information called GEOLOGY, CONSTRUCT, CHEMICAL and HYDROGEOL represent the availability of geological records, construction details, water quality data and hydrogeological data (sold separate to the rest water level and aquifer properties data) respectively. They have an 'unknown' value where the paper records have yet to be checked for their content.

Waste sites

The waste site index is a listing of some 3 500 waste sites in England and Wales identified by BGS as part of a survey carried out on behalf of the DoE in 1973. The index has been corrected and updated to a limited extent, but the data itself has not been changed. The data was collected in 1972 and the information reflects the knowledge at that time. It does not reflect current interpretation. Not all authorities made returns and there are not records for all of the sites listed. However, the data is an invaluable source of information about pre-1974 sites. The records themselves contain interpretations of the geology, ground and surface water risk assessments and information about the quantities and types of waste.

Landslides

The National Landslides Database holds over 15 000 records of landslides and is the definitive source of landslide information for Great Britain (excludes Northern Ireland, Isle of Man and the Channel Islands).

1:50 000 series geological maps

This shows where there are 1:50 000 series geological maps. To order maps, take note of the map name and order number and contact the BGS sales team.

These maps show the occurrence, nature and stratigraphic age of rocks. They are available for most areas of the United Kingdom, and in a number of versions (Solid, Drift, or Solid and Drift combined). Maps are normally available in both flat and folded format. The map grids are based on the now discontinued Ordnance Survey Old Series One-inch Sheet Grids. The 1:50 000 series also includes reprinted maps that were originally published at the 1:63 360 scale.

For Scotland, maps are usually divided into eastern and western parts, for example sheets S038E and S038W, although earlier full sheets, showing different versions of the geology (see above), may still be available.

National grid maps (1:10 000)

National grid maps (1:10 000 and 1:10 560 scale) - Since the 1960s the standard large scale map for recording geological information has been the Ordnance Survey (OS) quarter sheet, covering a 5km by 5km area. The maps are supplied in different formats depending on their age and the method of compliation or reproduction used. Only the latest and most up-to-date version is listed.

Administrative Areas

Local authority district boundaries (England and Wales) and region boundaries (Scotland).

Superficial deposits 1:625 000 scale

The 'Superficial deposits' shown on the GeoIndex map includes the youngest geological deposits laid down in England and Wales, Scotland and part of Northern Ireland. This map is based on the first edition Drift 1:625 000 scale Geological Map of the United Kingdom published in 1977 as two sheets, North and South, available from the BGS Internet Shop.

The Superficial deposits, mainly formed in the Quaternary period of geological time, which extends from the present back to 2 million years ago. Many of the deposits were formed during episodes of glaciation ,or deposited by rivers. They occur as discontinuous patches and larger spreads and rest on top of the older rocks (referred to in the Bedrock).

Most of these Superficial deposits are unconsolidated sediments such as gravel, sand, silt and clay. The name of each deposit or group of deposits corresponds to that shown on the published 1:625 000 map e.g. River Terrace Deposits.

Bedrock 1:625 000 scale

The 'bedrock' shown on the GeoIndex map comprises the bedrock geology, which represents the outcrops (at surface) and subcrops (at near-surface, beneath superficial deposits) in England and Wales, Scotland and part of Northern Ireland. It is based on the third edition Solid 1:625 000 scale Geological Map of the United Kingdom published in 1979 as two sheets, North and South. These sheets are available from the BGS Internet Shop.
